About Satori
HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SATORI KARATE
The art of karate (kara – empty, te – hand) was developed in Okinawa, an island off Japan. It was originally practiced by monks to develop their mental and physical strength, and maintain good health.
After occupying Japanese forces banned the carrying of weapons by the natives of Okinawa, the Okinawans were forced to learn to defend themselves with their hands only, hence the name ‘karate’ or ‘empty hand’.
Satori Karate teaches Tani-Ha Shitoryu Shukokai karate. Shukokai meaning ‘way for all’. Master Tani was the founder of Shukokai Karate, he was a direct student of shito-ryu founder Mabuni. Shito-ryu is considered to be a the balance between the two original okinawan karate styles Naha and Shuri, incumbasing the best of both styles both long and circular. The result is a style which offers the individual the ultimate in personal development as well as self defence and traditional training.
Satori Karate is suitable for men and women of all ages because of its emphasis on effective technique as opposed to brute strength.
The word satori translates to a ‘state of enlightenment or awakening of one’s true path’. The logo symbolises the new beginning and light in the form of the yellow fist representing the sun, the blue outline representing Australia and the oceans that surround our country and the stars represent a direction of truth and perseverance to being one’s best self.
